This is one of the compulsory courses in the English Strand of the PGDE (Secondary) programme, and the Certificate in Education (Secondary English Strand).

Aims
This course aims to develop in learners:

  • Understanding of current developments in English language teaching;
  • Knowledge of the applied linguistic theories that inform language teaching and learning processes;
  • Ability to reflect on and, where necessary, modify existing professional knowledge and teaching practices;
  • Capability to teach effectively within the context of the secondary English curriculum for Hong Kong.

The course covers the following topics:

  • Issues in language curriculum renewal
  • Reflective teaching
  • Second language acquisition
  • English language teaching approaches
  • Teaching the English language system
  • The classroom and the learner
  • Assessment
  • Listening and speaking
  • Reading and writing
  • Evaluation and planning

Learning support
This course involves 300 study hours. There will be ten tutorials and two workshops, each lasting two hours.

Assessment
There will be five assignments (including a project) and a final examination. Except for some designated assignments, students are required to submit assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).
